HPV test vs Pap smear — what is the difference

The two tests give different information about the cervix. Learn when each is used and how they can be combined.
Pap smears and HPV tests are often mentioned together — and that causes confusion. Both are part of cervical screening, but they look for different things.
What a Pap smear shows
A Pap smear (cytology) examines cervical cells under a microscope. The goal is to spot cellular changes — from mild findings to results that need further assessment.
It is suitable during a preventive visit and when the doctor recommends screening based on your age and history.
What an HPV test shows
An HPV test looks for DNA (or RNA) of human papillomavirus — especially high-risk types linked to precancerous changes. A positive result is not a cancer diagnosis; it means you need a clear explanation and a plan.
When they are combined
In practice the choice is individual. Sometimes a Pap smear is enough; other times HPV testing leads, or both are done together. The decision follows a conversation — not a generic internet template.
If results need a closer look, the next step may be colposcopy.
