What is colposcopy and when is it done

Colposcopy sounds worrying to many women — mostly because the name is unfamiliar. In practice, it is a precise magnified examination of the cervix.

When it is recommended

Most often for:

• abnormal Pap smear results;
• visible changes that need closer assessment;
• follow-up after a previous finding.

The goal is earlier, more accurate assessment — not necessarily “bad news.”

How it goes

The doctor examines the cervix with a colposcope. A sample may be taken if needed. Most women describe the sensation as discomfort similar to a regular exam.

How to prepare

• Share previous results.
• Ask in advance exactly what will be done.
• If you feel anxious, say so — explanation reduces tension.

After the procedure

The doctor will explain what was seen and whether further steps are needed. Result timelines depend on whether samples were taken.
